DO YOU NEED PLANNING PERMISSION?We are often asked by customers if Planning permission is required to install a stove or flue/chimney. If you are using a HETAS registered installer you do not need to apply to Building Control to install a stove, fireplace or line a chimney providing your engineer’s competencies cover the proposed works. If your installer is not HETAS registered you MUST apply to Building Control for any of these works. You must also check the competencies of your installer if relying on a HETAS certification as not all HETAS installers are registered to carry out all types of work. However, Building Control and Planning are two entirely separate applications. As a general rule of thumb, if you can answer no to ALL of these questions, you do not need to apply to Planning for permission to install a chimney:- 1. Is the building an SSI or listed? 2. Will the chimney be higher than 1000mm out of the roof? 3. Will the chimney be on a prime elevation? There are other criteria to meet and you should check with the senior planner at Planning if in doubt. We have been approached by many customers recently for a second […]

Most chimney fires are preventable. Regular inspection and cleaning of chimney flues will help prevent fires within chimneys. The latest statistics show that there are approximately 7,000 chimney fires a year in E…ngland, but most of these are preventable. To keep yourself and your family safe from fire you should take care to have your chimney swept regularly, depending upon what fuel you burn, before the colder winter months set in and you begin to use your fire and chimneys again. If the worst should happen, a smoke alarm can give you the extra time you need to escape in a house fire – make sure you test yours regularly. Regular maintenance of your chimney will depend on the fuel you burn: •Oil – Once a year •Gas – Once a year •Bituminous – coal Twice a year •Wood – Up to four times a year depending on the quality of wood burnt •Smokeless coals – At least once a year The most common causes of chimney fires are: -Improper appliance sizing -Burning unseasoned wet wood -Infrequent sweeping and cleaning -Overnight burning or smouldering wood for long periods in wood stoves without correct maintenance -Incorrect installation of appliance -Obstruction within […]

We are pleased to be promoting a brand new product in Jersey for the re-lining and renovation of disused chimneys. FuranFlex RWV has been specially developed to cater for solid fuel open fires and has been tested to 1000°C by many European Test Houses and by BSRIA and is certified by BBA in the United Kingdom. FuranFlex RWV is the only composite chimney lining to have been tested and approved to the relevant British Standards and be listed by HETAS. FuranFlex RWV has been used on many listed properties and thatched properties to bring chimneys safely back into use. The liner is installed into the chimney as a flat flexible hose, inflated with air at only 0.1-0.2Bar reducing any stress on the existing structure. The liner is then “steamed” and this process begins a reaction in the resin and once the resin reaches 1000 celsius it sets as hard as steel. Once this reaction has taken place the liner is cured and ready to use. FuranFlex RWV chimney linings has been used for many years in 27 european countries and 2,000 metres have been successfully installed in the UK over the last 24 months. Only factory trained and accredited engineers are […]
